What are your memories of the game?
I remember reading a few on here saying they were in Metz (at the marvellously named Stade Saint-Symphorien), and that it was a terrific night.
It was a massive shock to have finally qualified for the UEFA cup after all those years of trying.
Starting the campaign early for the Inter Toto helped us get off to a fantastic start in the League too, if I remember correctly.

I was there. Down the side of the pitch though. Not behind the goal on the terrace where the fences were getting pulled down. Remember Moncs jumping up on the wall celebrating with us at the end. I think fat Frank scored? Was a top day/night/morning.
Chartered planes that everyone pilied off onto the runway! Queues on the plane for toilets where everyone was blatantly doing gear.

I was on holiday in France and watched it in the bar with my son when we got 2 up on the night the transmission went down and I joked we'd be three up and when it came back on we were!
My son was leaping around all overthe place!!!

The new Fila and Dr Martens kit. Good signings, apart from Gary Charles and Rob Jones, Scott minto.
We beat a few teams before the metz home leg in which we struggled to hit the target. Lampard Jnr was key in these games I felt.
Metz 2nd leg everyone clicked. Sinclair Di Canio, Wanchope stealing the show on a warm evening.
I was too young to go, but remember it in the school holidays live on Sky

I was 14 and on holiday in Menorca with my parents, nan, aunt, uncle and cousin.
Thought we had no chance of seeing the game but the day before we saw a bar advertising it, so that evening off we went. We hadn't seen a West Ham shirt all week but when we went in, it was full of Hammers.
Great night.

still got the ticket. four of us drove over and stayed in a little b&b the night of the game. it was a beautiful little town, the weather was spot on and we played great. I was near the fencing two thirds of the way up behind the goal and the metz fans got carried away, and shit themselves when loads right next to the fence tried to rip it down. the riot police stayed between us for the rest of the game. by far my favourite away game

a qualifying tournament to the Eufa Cup which we failed in the qualifier and we finished 5th in the EPL All looks crazy now imagine the crying now if you finished 5th and had to do this to get into Europe proper .

My one and only European away trip. So I have a 100% record.
What a great day. Got the coach early in the morning. Exchanged wanker signs with the Rangers fans in the other coach at Calais. Took fucking ages to get to Metz. Found a boat that was also a pub and West Ham completely took it over. Then turning round a 1-0 deficit to win the tie and qualify for Europe for the first time in 18 years. Even the stewards blasting our fans with water couldn’t dampen the occasion. Metz fans in the other parts of the ground even clapped us off at the end.

Was there as well along the side, great night - also went to Heerenveen, Jokerit, Osijek/Croatia/Italy for a week and England games in Warsaw and Glasgow along with a couple of extra trips to Holland all in space of about three months
Unsurprisingly work told me to fuck off when I put in for time off to get to Bucharest
